Hitz-Rhodehomel Nature Preserve
Mary McConnell Nature Trail

The Mary Mcconnell Nature Trail in the Hitz-Rhodehamel Nature Preserve is nestled in the hills of Brown County and is just outside of Nashville. The Nature Conservancy maintains this 3-mile trail, and trail stewards work hard to pull invasive plant species to show off the native flora. We love this trail for its varying terrain and the informational plaques posted along the way, which inform visitors about prescribed burns, wildlife, and trees.

Trevlac Bluffs trail and rectangular blaze on a tree

Trevlac Bluffs Nature Preserve
The Yellowwood Trail & Bottomland Trail

Trevlac Bluffs Nature Preserve boasts two trails that take hikers across tall bluffs and low bottomlands. The Yellowwood Trail snakes through the woods and across a 200 ft tall bluff that overlooks Beanblossom Creek. It also includes a stand of eastern hemlock trees that are rare to find in Indiana. The Bottomland Trail leads hikers on a .7-mile loop and meets up with Beanblossom Creek. The Tecumseh Trail can also be accessed from the Bottomland Trail parking lot. The Sycamore Land Trust tirelessly works to control invasive plants and maintain the health of the forest. If you’re looking for an adventure off the beaten path, these trails are for you.

Jackson Creek Trail

Yellowwood State Forest

Yellowwood State Forest in Nashville, Indiana is often called a "hidden gem," and we couldn't agree more. The 1.3-mile Jackson Creek Trail offers a perfect introduction to the beauty of this stunning forest. As you hike, you'll be treated to wildflowers, serene lake views, and the soothing sounds of Jackson Creek. The trailhead shares a parking lot with a boat launch on Yellowwood Lake, making it easy to enjoy a refreshing paddle after your hike. This trail also links up with the Lake Trail, another popular trail in the state forest. The Jackson Creek Trail can be accessed from the north boat ramp parking lot at the north end of Yellowwood Lake. Laura Hare Nature Preserve at Downey Hill trail

Laura Hare Nature Preserve at Downey Hill

The Laura Hare Nature Preserve at Downey Hill is one of our favorite hikes. Just east of Nashville, this 6-mile trek through the woods offers beautiful views and varying terrain. If you're looking for a shorter adventure, it can be split into two 3-mile loop hikes on the north and south ends via an old fire road. Maintained by the Sycamore Land Trust, the trail was completed by the Hoosier Hikers Council in 2017. It takes hikers along ridgelines and through valleys, making it a moderate to rugged hike.

"It was great to have a group of funny and helpful women to hike the 10-mile low gap trail with. Setting up camp, learning about fire starting, and hanging out under a tarp (since it rained!) were all great times. Thank you for providing so many camp meal options, the extra stove, and knowing how to keep us safe and dry during the very rainy overnight! I love our gift bag with the tshirt and camp mug!"
